Plant Recognizes Milestone with "Sweet 16" Event

JANESVILLE, Wisc. - General Motors Janesville Assembly plant recognized a milestone of producing 16 million vehicles with a special program held August 23, 2005. "For more than 80 years, our joint UAW Local 95 / GM work force has been producing high-quality vehicles in Janesville," said Plant Manager Gary Malkus. "The Sweet 16 event commemorated our production of 16 million vehicles and gave us an opportunity to thank our employees for their hard work and commitment."
The "Sweet 16" program kicked off two days of events that recognize Janesville's production heritage, recent quality and productivity awards as well as an upcoming new product launch.

"We're extremely proud that the Chevrolet Suburban was named the highest ranked full-size SUV in the 2005 J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality StudySM for the third consecutive year," said Malkus. "It's truly a testament to the dedication to quality that is demonstrated by everybody in the plant every day."

"We're excited to be recognizing this important milestone and congratulating the generations of employees who have built award-winning products since 1923," said UAW Local 95 President and Wisconsin Assemblyman, Mike Sheridan. "There are many in Wisconsin depending on the success of GM in Janesville and we're looking forward to continuing our legacy with the next generation of full-size SUVs."

Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle was in attendance of the event along with Secretary of Commerce Mary Burke. The Governor announced that GM Janesville Assembly would receive a $5.4 million state incentive package to help offset training for future production.

The plant concluded the event by donating a 2005 Chevy Uplander, equipped with Sit-N-Lift, to the United Way of North Rock County. The van with the state-of-the-art engineering of the Sit-N-Lift will benefit people with limited mobility in the Janesville and surrounding communities.

Janesville Assembly started production in 1923, initially building full-size Chevrolet automobiles. Today, the facility builds the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, Yukon Denali, Yukon Denali XL and Isuzu/GM Low Cab Forward medium-duty truck. In calendar year 2004 the plant produced almost 220,000 vehicles. There are approximately 3,800 employees at the facility. GM recently invested $ 175 million into Janesville Assembly for production of new full-size SUVs. The plant is currently in the middle of preparations for the launch of these new models.
